Synagogue Policies

POLICY AGAINST DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT

It is the policy of Congregation Brit Shalom that all individuals should be able to enjoy an environment free of disruptive elements, discrimination, and harassment. This policy includes harassment in the following areas:  race, (2) sex, (3) age, (4) color, (5) national origin, (6) religion, (7) disability, (8) marital status, (9) sexual orientation, and (10) veteran status.

Harassment includes display or circulation of written or electronic materials or pictures degrading to either gender or to racial, ethnic, or religious groups; and verbal abuse or insults directed at or made in the presence of members of a racial, ethnic, or minority group.

Discrimination and sexual harassment will not be tolerated by Congregation Brit Shalom.  Individuals who experience such violations should report them to the President or one of the elected officers.

POLICY AGAINST PHYSICAL ABUSE, MENTAL ABUSE, SEXUAL ABUSE, AND SEXUAL MOLESTATION

Congregation Brit Shalom does not permit actual or threatened acts of physical or mental abuse, sexual abuse, sexual molestation or sexual misconduct to occur at any activity sponsored by or related to it.  In order to make this "zero-tolerance" policy clear to all employees, volunteers and staff members, we have adopted mandatory procedures that employees, volunteers, family members, Board members, individuals and victims must follow when they reasonably suspect, learn of or witness prohibited conduct.

Abuse or molestation means each, every and all actual, threatened or alleged acts of physical or mental abuse, sexual abuse, sexual molestation or sexual misconduct performed by one person or by two or more persons acting together.

Abuse and Molestation will not be tolerated by Congregation Brit Shalom.  Individuals who experience such violations should report them to the President or one of the elected officers. Where it is determined that such inappropriate conduct has occurred, Congregation Brit Shalom will act promptly to eliminate the conduct.

ANTI-BULLYING POLICY

Congregation Brit Shalom considers bullying unacceptable and will not tolerate it under any circumstances.  Congregation Brit Shalom defines bullying as persistent, malicious, unwelcome, severe and pervasive mistreatment that harms, intimidates, offends, degrades or humiliates a person, whether verbal, physical or otherwise, at the synagogue.

Congregation Brit Shalom strongly urges the prompt reporting of complaints or concerns so that rapid and constructive action can be taken. Individuals who believe they have experienced conduct that they believe violates this policy should report their complaints verbally or in writing to Members of the Board of the Congregation, or to the President of the Congregation.
