Art Gallery Talk About Simeon Solomon

On Sunday November 15th at 1:00 PM, we will hear a live talk by Curator Sophie Lynford on the upcoming exhibit, “Simeon Solomon: Queer and Jewish in Victorian London,” that will run at the Delaware Museum of Art from March 13, 2027 – June 27, 2027.

Sophie Lynford, the Annette Woodard-Provine Curator of the Bancroft Pre-Raphaelite Collection at the Delaware Art Museum, will be exploring the life and art of Solomon, a 19th-century artist whose Jewish and queer identities deeply shaped his work, and we will consider why his story remains meaningful for Jewish audiences today.

We will examine Solomon’s biblical subjects, including David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, and Moses, as well as his later classical and allegorical themes and the impact of his 1873 arrest for “homosexual crimes” on his career.

The talk will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming exhibition—the first in the United States devoted to Solomon—and consider why his story remains meaningful for Jewish audiences today.
